How to budget

So, you're looking for more information about how to budget. I find that commendable. It tells me that you have problems or concerns about how you're spending your money. It also tells me that you may want to make a change in how you spend that money.

I want to begin by telling you that there is no magic bullet when it comes to budgeting. There is no software, no worksheet, or template that will automatically provide you with a good budget. These things may prove to be aides in your efforts. But they are only aides. A good budget is a careful plan of how you spend your money. It will require some effort on your part.

If you really want to learn how to budget, you must realize that each and every budget is unique. Even though all of us share general budgeting categories such as food, shelter and clothing the amount that we allocate to each category depends upon our individual needs and desires. That means that each budget is unique to each individual or household.

The simplest way to learn how to budget and develop a satisfactory budget is to realize that there are two primary factors to be considered.

The first factor that you must consider is income. How much money do you have to spend as you develop your plan for that spending? Be sure to consider all your sources of income if you want them to be a part of your spending plan. I do not recommend that you include irregular income such as overtime in your basic budget. That income should be used for your wants and desires and not for your needs.

The second factor that you must consider is spending. A good analysis of how you spend your money is necessary for a good budget. A prime indicator that you need to make a detailed analysis of your spending is if you're spending exceeds your income and you are going deeper in debt.

The best way to analyze your spending is to keep a detailed log of everything that you spend. You should group your spending into categories that make it very detailed to begin with. Don't worry about having too many categories. You may find it possible to combine categories later. Keep this log for at least two months. An analysis of this log should let you see where your money is going. Don't forget to consider those items that are not paid on a monthly basis. Look at the annual cost of those items and divide by 12 to include them in your monthly budget.

Once you know where your money is going, then you have the capability of adjusting spending to better achieve what you want your budget to do. Hopefully a good budget developed through careful analysis will lead to fewer sleepless nights and less worry on your part.

I want you to realize that just as there is no magic bullet for learning how to budget, a good budget is not a magic bullet to alleviate financial worries. It is not enough to learn how to budget, establish the budget, and then continue to spend as you have in the past. You must conform your spending to the budget that you have developed if you want to reach that goal that you have established.

Great hub and I have to admit a weakness of mine also. I like to spend money. It is fun to buy things. So I am kept in line by a wife who is in love with excel spreadsheets. She grabs me by the ear and asks was this really necessary? Well no but I wanted it.

You are so right that a budget is the most important thing you can do to get to the place you want to be with finances. A person who learns to budget will become wealthy without even thinking about it.
